About the job:

Versatile is an innovative AI-driven construction intelligence startup, committed to transforming the construction industry with cutting-edge technology. Our mission is to enhance the efficiency, safety, and productivity of construction projects through intelligent solutions.

We build tools that allow our customers and users to be data-informed in their decision-making, based on field-execution data we collect on actual construction job sites and our advanced processing capabilities.

This process starts with deploying proprietary industry-grade IoT devices through which we collect construction data.

As a Senior Hardware Engineer (PCB and System Integration), you will lead the design, integration, and assembly of devices that combine custom PCBs with off-the-shelf components such as Raspberry Pi, cellular modems, cameras, and various physical sensors. Your role will involve the complete development lifecycle, from board design to system integration, through planning for manufacturing and acceptance engineering. You will work closely with cross-functional teams to ensure the seamless integration of all components and deliver robust, scalable hardware solutions.

Initially, you will mainly focus on improvements and adjustments to our current hardware solution on the one hand, and working closely with our manufacturing and assembly team to improve processes and reliability on the other.

Soon after, you will work on our next-generation hardware solution, from inception, through POC, manufacturing, rollout, and scaling.

Responsibilities:

  • PCB & components optimization: Start by making improvements and enhancements to our current hardware stack through changes to components, adjustments to design, and close work with our manufacturing and assembly center to improve processes and reliability.
  • PCB Design & Integration: Soon after, lead the design and development of our next-gen custom PCBs while integrating off-the-shelf components (e.g., Raspberry Pi, modems, cameras, and physical sensors) into final products.
  • System Architecture: Define system architecture and component selection, ensuring compatibility and scalability of hardware components.
  • Assembly Planning: Develop comprehensive assembly plans, ensuring smooth integration of proprietary and commercial components, considering both electrical and mechanical factors.
  • Component Selection & Sourcing: Select, evaluate, and source components based on availability, cost, and integration ease, while optimizing for production and performance.
  • Prototyping & System Testing: Lead the prototyping process, overseeing both the hardware and system-level testing to validate the functionality and performance of the integrated system.
  • Manufacturing Readiness: Collaborate with manufacturing teams to plan the production process, including design for manufacturability (DFM) and design for assembly (DFA).
  • Cross-functional Collaboration: Work closely with electrical, mechanical, and software teams to ensure that the integration of all components meets functional, regulatory, and safety requirements.
  • Documentation & Compliance: Develop thorough design and assembly documentation, and ensure compliance with relevant industry standards and certifications.
  • Vendor & Contractor Management: own and lead work with various vendors and contractors to ensure our customers receive top-of-the-line devices.

Requirements:

  • 8+ years of experience in PCB design, development, and system-level hardware integration.
  • Hands-on experience in integrating commercial components (e.g., modems, cameras, physical sensors) with custom PCBs., particularly with embedded systems like Raspberry Pi.
  • Experience in bringing integrated hardware systems to production.
  • Strong knowledge of schematic capture and PCB design tools (e.g., OrCAD, Altium Designer, Cadence Allegro).
  • Knowledge of design for manufacturability (DFM), design for assembly (DFA), and system testing.
  • Proficiency in hardware debugging and testing, signal integrity, and thermal and power consumption management and optimization.
  • Strong knowledge of product compliance and certification standards (e.g., CE, FCC).
  • Experience with device assembly and production planning.
  • Familiarity with wireless communication systems (e.g., cellular, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth) – preferred.
  • Experience with managing contractors and vendors – preferred.
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, or related field.
