Versatile’s Product Marketing Director, Jackie Guilbault, speaks with site power users on the first Wednesday of each month about their experience using CraneView®.

Versatile creates solutions that measure and analyze your jobsite automatically without impacting any aspect of the jobsite operations. Our platform aggregates daily performance and production metrics for key site activities on an online dashboard and in a daily or weekly round of emails with individual reports we call “widgets”.

Our Widget Wednesday discussions focus on the question: How is our non-intrusive IoT device helping elevate users’ instincts and change the way they work—including monitoring, controlling, and improving processes on the jobsite daily?

In this episode, Jackie speaks with Wes Juergen, senior superintendent from Austin Commercial– one of the nation’s largest and most diversified construction companies working on impressive projects like the Q2 Stadium in Austin, Tx. and SFO Harvey Milk Terminal One Airport in San Francisco, CA.

Tell us about yourself and the project you’re on right now.

My name is Wes Juergen, senior superintendent for Austin Commercial. I’m currently working at the University of Houston in Houston, Texas building their new law school. It’s an 180,000 square foot, five-story academic building and concrete structure that will function as the new law school for the University of Houston.

You’re using our IoT system CraneView that provides daily reports on critical activities in a summation of widgets. What is your favorite report widget?

On a daily basis, I look at the “Time on the hook” widget broken down by category as well as by subcontractor. That really helps me plan out and execute the work that we’re doing today. I can make any adjustments that we need to in the future to ensure we’re maximizing hook time to meet our schedule demands.

Without CraneView, how would you have made those types of decisions or get that visibility before?

Before that, we relied on a crane marshall to monitor our daily production. If you really wanted accurate data, a guy standing there with a watch could check the times on this and that, but we never had full, accurate data. We would round things off to the closest hour and relied on our crane operator to describe how long it took to do something.

By getting accurate data with CraneView, we’re able to analyze anything– from how long it takes to unload a typical rebar truck, to how long it takes to pour columns.

We can also identify outliers. If one day we noticed it was taking 45 minutes longer than what it normally does, we can figure out what happened and how to compensate for it.

Overall, how would you say CraneView has helped you work for the better?

Everything is about schedule execution, schedule management, and eliminating factors and variables that allow me to help plan future work.
